In Chapter 4 of the Resident Evil 4 remake, players encounter a central mystery at the Mural Cave near the lake. To rescue Ashley, Leon must retrieve the Church Insignia from a stone pedestal flanked by two carved hands. This requires navigating the surrounding waters to locate two missing stone heads hidden behind symbol-based cave puzzles.
Locating the Cave Shrines on the Lake
After reaching the Mural Cave, players can inspect a wall painting that marks two crucial locations on the map. These destinations are the Small Cave Shrine to the northeast and the Large Cave Shrine located near the southern docks. Navigating between these areas using the motorboat allows players to collect both required key items efficiently.
Each shrine features a pedestal locked behind a combination door that requires specific symbol inputs. These yellow painted markings are scattered around the environment, often requiring precise perspective alignment to read correctly. Finding these clues is essential before returning to the central mural area.
Solving the Small Cave Shrine Symbol Puzzle
The Small Cave Shrine is situated on the northeastern side of the lake and presents a compact puzzle area. Players must observe three yellow symbols painted across the wooden walls and cavern rock faces. Alignment is key, as two of the symbols only come together when viewed from elevated or angled positions.
To unlock the shrine door, interact with the console and press the three corresponding symbol buttons in any order. Upon entering the correct combination, the stone door opens to reveal the Blasphemer's Head item. Players can also retrieve Hexagon Piece C from a nearby container before departing.
Solving the Large Cave Shrine Symbol Puzzle
The Large Cave Shrine requires careful navigation as several hostile Ganados patrol the multi-level cavern. Players should clear out the enemies first before attempting to align the yellow painted symbols on the stone columns and cave walls. The symbols include overlapping curved lines and vertical pillar patterns hidden across different elevation levels.
After identifying the three correct patterns, head to the altar pedestal located on the upper platform. Input the matching symbols on the device to unseal the door leading to the Apostate's Head. Securing this item completes the second half of the requirement needed to progress the main storyline.
Claiming the Church Insignia
With both stone heads safely in hand, return to the Mural Cave and approach the central shrine. Slot the Apostate's Head and Blasphemer's Head into the empty stone hands on either side of the mechanism. The lock will automatically disengage, allowing Leon to pick up the Church Insignia key.
Before heading back to unlock the church gate, make sure to finish exploring any remaining lake locations. Crossing the bridge toward the church triggers story progression that prevents returning to the lake area immediately. Taking time to gather nearby treasures ensures maximum preparation for upcoming boss encounters.
